Just wanted to share my second spindle spun baby :) This is 8 oz of superwash merino fiber in my Mermaid colorway that I spun to a heavy worsted weight and about 260 yards. I about dislocated my collarbone doing it in about 4 days, but I have to say I learned a lot again and am quite pleased with how it came out (although by no means perfect). I am trying to decide if it is too girly to make some shorties for Emerson... what do you think?

Look what I did!

Having been bitten by the spinning bug (no not some exotic Texas beetle - the driving desire to create handspun yarn, LOL!) I ordered a spindle (OK, 3 different ones) online. I started yesterday spinning about 8 ounces of my Lady of the Lake colorway on superwash merino top into 2 skeins of 4 ounce single plys. Then today I finished them up and plied them together into an 8 ounce 2 ply skein. This is my first attempt, and I certainly learned A LOT from beginning to end :) But I am very happy with the end product as a first attempt - I was afraid it would be some hideous tangled mess by the time I got through, LOLOL! But boy.... does my back hurt!

OK, without further ado...

Let me introduce "Vintage" featuring wine inspired colors of Merlot, Blush, Raisin and Rose. Shown here on Morgaine Superwash Merino Fingering.

And "Fire Swamp" in shades of Fiery Red and Orange, Swamp Green, and Smokey Gray with dapples of subtly accentuated color - inspired by one of my all time favorite movies, "The Princess Bride" and a long overdue addition to my Princess Bride series of colorways. Shown here on Morgaine Superwash Merino Fingering.

And "Pan" in shades of Reddish brown, Purple, Turquoise, Green, Cantaloupe, and Fire Engine Red is loosely based on a one-of-a-kind colorway called "Pan's Meadow" that was created during my stay at the Enchanted Glen congo. Shown here on Guinvere Superwash Merino Worsted/DK.

You may recognize this glistening beauty with shades of Peach, Spearmint, Turquoise, Wisteria, and Purple :) "Mermaid" is a new version of the one-of-a-kind colorway that was created for the Enchanted Glen Mermaid stocking with the same name. It is essentially the same colors except it is space dyed and since I took no notes at the time, I am sure it is slightly different color mixtures, LOL! I just loved the combo and had to bring it back! Shown here on Arthur Superwash Merino Sport, Morgaine Superwash Merino Fingering, and our new Excaliber Superwash Merino Bulky which is to-die-for soft! It feels like a superwash version of Gaia Bulky!! I am in LOVE with it :)

Meet "Merman" in soothing shades of Navy blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Turquoise, and Spearmint Green it is a wonderfully masculine counterpart to our "Mermaid" colorway. Shown here on Morgaine Superwash Merino Fingering and Excaliber Superwash Merino Bulky.

And those of you that are very familiar with my colorways know that I tend to love LOTS of color and its reaaaalllly hard for me to leave any natural yarn showing. BUT, in an effort at some zen balance I thought it was appropriate to honor the Arthurian legend, "The Lady of the Lake" with a more reflective, simple and soft colorway with the pale watery shades of Iris, Turquoise and Spearmint and an equal amount of misty white. I couldn't resist and lightly dappled very muted shades of those colors throughout the white - though its barely visible :)

And finally we come to "Caprica", the second colorway born of my love for the now defunct "Battlestar Galactica" series. Based on an amazingly complex character that is both the downfall and savior of the human race, this colorway features Light and Dark Red, Very Pale Blue, Butter Cream Blonde, Natural White, and Steely Silver.

These are the last of our announced 10 new Fall 2009 colorways. These sneak peeks are meant to give you an idea of the colors, but the really rockin' pics are yet to come. I can't wait to get some really nice professional pics from my sister for the listings :) Who knew posing yarn could be so much fun, LOL!

Please welcome "Battlestar" to the mix :) Featuring tan, dark red, dark green, navy blue, silver and charcoal it reflects all the colors that I associate with my much loved and missed Sci-Fi (now goofily called Sy Fy) series "Battlestar Galactica".

For those looking for a more traditional boyish colorway - I hope this one fits the bill, LOL! BTW, all dyeing is now done, and the yarny goodness is just waiting for its day with my sis the photographer ;) I decided to keep all yarn heavier than fingering weight in 8 oz skeins rather than dividing them. So there will be no knots to contend with :)

I am devastated to share the news from my first OB appointment today. Our babies heart stopped beating two weeks ago at 8 1/2 weeks, and we are now waiting to miscarry. Please forgive me if I am a little unavailable for a bit while we deal with this.

Update on my son

UPDATE: Emerson had his surgery this morning and is recovering very well. Happily I can report that what we are doing IS working. The effected teeth had improved and slightly less work was required than initially thought I have stopped using the Ionic toothbrush as it seemed to have reversed some remineralizing that had been taking place, but am using the Restore toothpaste and feel it is very effective. Also, my dentist mentioned that he is hearing chatter about licorice helping with teeth and to do some research on that. So I will. And I am waiting for info on a Dentist in Texas that uses Healozone. Thanks to everyone for your support :)

Okey dokey! Things are coming along nicely, and I am beginning to work on listings :) I am setting the stocking date for Thursday, Feb 19th at 8am EST. This will be my Spring Cleaning Sale! Cleaning out as much of my inventory as I can before going fairly dormant, LOL! The day of the stocking everything is being offered in sets, and marked down $2 per skein. Each listing will be a "HOLD" type of listing which allows you to put it in your cart if you are stalking an item and still get other items as well rather than having to create several different orders using the "Buy It Now" button. You will see a timer letting you know how long until it will be put back in stock if you have not checked out with it. Yahoo Group members will also be sent a coupon for another 10% OFF!

The day AFTER the one day Spring Cleaning Sale I will re-list all unsold items as individual skeins, but they will be listed at full price. The 10% off coupon will still be good however through the end of March :)

Details of our regimen

Thanks for everyone's well wishes. I surely will let you know how its going :) So far the xylitol mints and everything else we are doing has had one noticeable effect on his teeth. One of his incisors which is still coming in had immediately decalcified upon emergence. It turned powdery white and began to dissolve like the others had. It has since stopped turning white and actually begun returning to the proper color which is a sign of remineralization - or healing itself. So that is giving me much hope.

For those that wanted more information, here is what we are doing:

Drinking and cooking with only reverse osmosis filtered water (we fill up the big bottles at Walmart and bought a simple lead free water crock on ebay).

Brushing with Spry xylitol non-fluoride tooth paste after every meal or more.

Giving him about 15 Ricochet xylitol mints (chocolate, punch and lemon lime flavored) from per day through out the day

Drinking only raw organic milk from pastured cows, no homogenization or pasteurization - ditto on the cheese found through realmilk.com
Minimal organic juice - only used to mix a small amount with his Fermented Cod Liver oil from Green pastures each morning

High vitamin raw butter oil from pastured cows processed as per Weston Price

Vitamins and mineral supplements crushed up in his food. The Bio-Dent and Catalyn from Standard Process

Organic pastured farm fresh eggs from my best friend Vikki
Organic pastured meats from local sources and coops

Organic veggies and fruits from coops and local sources

All grain products are made from grains I grind fresh with my new magic bullet from Walmart since I can't yet afford a real grain mill.

I process grains as specified in Nourishing traditions by presoaking them in kefir etc over night.

I am making and giving him daily fresh kefir, fil mjilk yogurt, home made cream cheese and a little bit of kombucha all purchased initially from Nick's Natural Nook

I am cooking everything in lots of butter as well as virgin cold pressed olive oil and coconut oil available from Radiant Life.

I am using Celtic or other nourishing salts in my seasoning.
For sweeteners we are using Raw Honey, maple syrup and Rapadura.

On its way in the mail from dentist.net I also have Dr. Collins Restore remineralizing toothpaste and an ionic tooth brush we will start using on him.

If any of this information can help anyone, I am very happy to share it. It is the result of pretty exhaustive research :) Much information is from the Weston A Price site and the cookbook Nourishing Traditions

I have incidentally lost 13 pounds so far in the last couple weeks without any real effort since making this diet change and taking the cod liver oil and butter oil. Which is a nice little bonus for all my hard work ;)

Another big change...

For those that don't know what has been going on with our family... my 2 year old son has been having some health issues. Nothing life threatening, we are in many ways very fortunate that his problems only involve his teeth. However, due to severe enamel problems he is having to go under general anesthesia for a second time to have more work done. The first time last April was horribly traumatic. So we aren't excited to go through it again. As a mother, I am of course trying to find the cause and solution to this problem. In spite of the near death experience that was his entry into this world, we are assured his issues are not the result of any of the medications or procedures he had or I had. Given that, and the knowledge that it is not a lock of hygiene. The next culprit I looked at was diet. While we were not perfect, I did think I was doing pretty well by him. Thanks to a very informative thread on Mothering I came to the realization that what I thought was a healthy diet was actually quiet poor. While I may never know if diet was to "blame" for his problem, along with excess fluoride in our water. What I do know is that there is a chance that I can stop and potentially reverse the damage through the diet found in the Nourishing Traditions cookbook and Weston A Price website. However, there is no way that I can continue to operate my business in any responsible way and give to my son the full and concentrated effort he now needs. I am running all over North Texas to locate and purchase the things needed for this diet. I am cooking intricate meals that require planning and coddling for days at a time. My kitchen has become a virtual science lab with jars of kombucha, kefir, fil mjilk, whey, and fermented vegetables. I've tossed out the microwave and invested in a monstrous freezer to stock up. My life must now revolve around healing my son. So... I am closing up shop. www.familypendragon.com will soon be gone, when I have the time to figure out how to close it. www.hyenacart.com/familypendragon will be restocked with only the sweater stones and pattern. I can imagine that a few times a year I may be able to stock some yarn or a custom or two. But it will be a rare occurrence I imagine, and will be announced through the blog and yahoo group. If you have a custom with me, have no fear, I do not let people down :) I am a little slower than normal, but I am reliable. I have loved creating for you. Thank you for the joy it brought me. I will miss you all very much. But I must be a mommy first :)

Closing my Hyenacart

I have been playing in my dyes again... I have at least 3 sets of "longies" yarn (meaning 8 oz with the option of trim) that will be stocking Monday August 25th at noon EST. I have been wanting to try my hand at turning my Low Water Immersion technique on my yarn. And I had so much fun creating these totally one of a kind yarn sets. I think they turned out gorgeous!! The techniques rendered results similar to kettle dyeing with blends and surprises through out the yarn. They should make some fabulous and one-of-a-kind longies! Of course - I am sure you could do lots of other things too, LOL! Rather than dyeing up trim now I will have it as an option at checkout and then dye it to order so you can pick your color or choose not to have any at all. I will share pics as soon as I can!

I hate to toot my own horn, especially since nothings selling right now, LOL! But I have to say that the longies/capris I will be posting tonight are (IMO) the most beautiful thing I've ever made. I single crocheted these small longies/capris from the top down in a brand new pattern I created for these which of course is designed to accomodate the cloth diapered babe. I used 8 full ounces of scrumptious Gaia Organic Merino bulky yarn. I first worked it up in its undyed and and unsoaked natural state in single crochet. I then soaked the longies to allow the yarn to bloom (fluff up) creating an even more dense "bulletproof" fabric. Then (and this is the really fun part) I hand painted them like a watercolor landscape painting! It was so much fun! I LOVE how they turned out!!! The have pretty lacey ruffle detailing at the bottom too... I have no little girl to put them on, and it seems silly to frame longies. So I am setting them up for auction in the cart. They will be closing when we get back from our trip on the 13th. I hope some one loves them as much as I do so I can ship them out when I get home! Anything purchased between now and then will be shipped when we get back :)

They are on Gaia Organic Worsted Merino - soooo soft :) YUM! They are the prototypes for future colorways. They will be named the same in the future, but will be slightly different than what will be available tomorrow - thus you will be getting something that is actually totally unique! Customs Dilemma :(

Unfortunately for all the sellers involved there have been rampant chargeback schemes run on various HC WAHMs in the past couple months. One of the things that has come to light is the fact that we, as sellers, are not adequately protected if we accept Paypal for custom orders. Because of this fact I am considering only allowing custom orders to be paid for in full by postal money order prior to starting a custom. I realize this is a scary idea for a customer, but I can only hope that my feedback history will speak for itself. The alternative is to just stop doing customs entirely, and I'd hate to do that - I love my customs! I will be working on getting new policies published on the site as time allows.

Just thought I'd take a minute to share some of my current projects :)
First of all, this is one of the custom skeins we just finished that will ship out tomorrow. This is the 3rd time this combo has been requested and I love it too. Its almost Medee but without the black. So we will probably be adding it to the permanent colorway collection. I've asked it's new owner for a name suggestion!
And this is Kelly's custom under way - won't be long now :) This is Bulky BFL in a more vivid version of Pixie Petals. Oh so cute! There will be a butterfly on them when they are all done :)
And here is something I whipped up the other night while waiting for other yarn to dry. It is a Tunisian halter top with Tunisian shell stitch (think thats right), Tunisian simple stitch, Tunisian reverse stitch and Tunisian knit stitch. It is in the Pixie Petals colorway. I am just needing to add a pretty button so the neck is adjustable.

This is another halter I have going with my own custom yarn that is almost the same as the first one except the colors are in a slightly different order. And another something I whipped up while waiting for yarn to dry - using a bunch of what I had laying around, LOL!

Custom crocheting continue into the wee hours each night ;) And next week we wrap up custom dyes and start on Woolgirl!

New colorway and update!

We are all out of custom dye slots and crochet slots at the moment, but I have added a gorgeous new colorway for Summer 2008. There are 3 skeins of Merlin sockyarn that are previewing now and will be available June 4th at 8 AM ET. In the meantime we are finishing up all the custom dye orders in preparation for starting the Woolgirl order next week! I will continue using my "night owl" time to work on the custom crochet orders. I have also somehow managed to make a couple instock items in my "freetime" that will be posted when I get a chance to take pictures etc. Looks like a great June is in store for Family Pendragon! Sorry I haven't been online much lately. Emerson had his dental surgery. It was wretched and not nearly as trauma free as we had hoped. And it ended up costing $2,000 which we ended up getting a care credit loan to cover. But at least it is done for now. We have been warned it may not hold, but we have our fingers crossed that it will. My husband hopefully has 2 part time jobs that will start in May so that we can get back on our feet. We had to night wean immediately after the dental work. We used the Dr. Jay Gordon method, and although it was far from easy - it did work. I had no night time to work for about 10 days, but now he is sleeping all the way till 6am. So we should be back in business soon :) I will be doing some dyeing tomorrow for some special orders that have come in via email. If anyone needs anything just email me and I'll see what I can do!

Update on the situation at Family Pendragon... my husband has still had no luck on the job front and now my son needs $1600 worth of dental surgery for his front teeth which broke when he fell in the driveway. So when it rains... yep, it pours. We made it through March, and will make it through April thanks to our loyal HC customers. Hoping to get halfway through May if needed thanks to the stimulus check... but praying he gets a job waaaay before then. If I am not online much it is because we are scrimping on energy usage - we are now using only solar lights and fans that my husband rigged up with solar panels and stuff he's been collecting for the last 4 years. Hoping to make a dent in our $400 a month energy bill! He also got around to putting up my clothes line (AKA solar clothes dryer) finally which also should help. So there are some advantages to the fact that he's unemployed, LOL! I have to try to see the good side or I'll go nuts. So, just trying to keep my chin up and my head above water.... this too shall pass.

Well, I tend not to air my dirty laundry in public. But at some point you just think - enough already!! I am sorry if I have not been as available this last month or so as I normally am. On top of creating the new website, completing the pattern, stocking my Hyenacart, doing 2 customs, dyeing a huge wholesale yarn order for Woolgirl (shipped it today so be on the lookout for her stocking!) we have been dealing with one thing after another in our personal lives. I don't like to complain because we are very fortunate and our problems are minor compared to so many others'. But I swear I have had enough! This month my husband went to the ER and missed 2 weeks of work, his Father had a stroke, my best friend's step-father had a heart attack, I'm sick, my son is sick and teething and his two broken front teeth are getting worse, my husband threw out his back, and now this morning my husband lost his job! Its going to get better right!!?? Anyway, end of rant - just had to blow off some steam so I can put up a strong front for the hubby when he gets home from applying for jobs. I am sure something better is just around the corner... right?

The demo longies are now done - pics yet to be posted on HC. The plan is to spend some time this week and on the weekend trying to finish up the pattern :)

My computer is put back together, although I can't find my photoshop installation disk - so photo manipulation is now a much longer process :( But we may just have to spring for another one... yikes!

A tale of two websites

It has been a very full week! For those that may not have heard, I experienced a complete hard drive failure. I thought I had lost everything!! I was devastated to think I'd lost all my son's photos... not to mention the pattern, the website photos, all my data.... Luckily my wonderful Brother-In-Law, Austin, was able to retrieve all my data with his techy know-how. Now I have to find all my installation disks and reinstall all my programs on the new hard drive. I know its going to be slow and painful.... but at least it can be done!

In the meantime, Vikki and I have been doing several custom orders and working on streamlining production. The new site is about ready to go online and we've had to make some very hard decisions. Some changes were necessary in order to keep turn around times as reasonable as possible, quality high, and colorways as consistent as possible. We have decided that the new site will not carry yarns heavier than DK/ Light Worsted Weight. Heavier yarns take considerably more time and labor to dye. If we offer them on our new Dye-On-Demand site there will be no way for us to give reliable turn-around times. The Cestari's and Organic Gaia Merino will still be available on a limited basis, but ONLY through our Hyenacart in the form of either instock yarn or occasional custom slots. We have also decided to phase out the BFL yarns. There are many reasons for this - supply has been unreliable and slow, the minimum orders are three times as high, the overhead is high, and most especially the fact that the colors take in a much paler and less consistent way than the merinos. So - once our current supply is exhausted we will no longer carry BFL. That still leaves us with plenty to choose from! We feel we've made the best choices for our customers, and we hope you will love the new site :)

Impressionists Rainbow is a new colorway - the first designed by Vikki for the Family Pendragon collection. It's gorgeous! Vikki has several others that have yet to be added to our collection - due simply to lack of time, LOL! Be on the look out for some more lovely spring colorways from Vikki in the near future!

Wow - so much going on!

Well, knock on wood, but I think the new website is going to be ready really soon. We're working on ideas to celebrate our grand opening.... any ideas out there?

The longies that are the subject of the photos for the Tunisian pattern are almost done... which means - yes - the photos are almost done! Then I just need to to get everything edited, cropped and put together so it can get tested.... that is where a few FP fans will come in ;)

Woolgirl has let us know that she NEEDS more Family Pendragon yarn, LOL! So as soon as that new order is in we will be hopping again around here - just dyeing up a storm!

We are also going to be adding a few new yarns to our selection soon. They will probably be premiering at www.woolgirl.com with her next order!

I have some new colorways burning a hole in my head, and I want some new pics of some old colorways for our new website too. So that means we may be dyeing up some yarn for instock on our Hyenacart - more on that when it happens! You'll hear about it here first :)

Its official! We've taken the plunge :)

We have teamed up with Michelle of Elemetal Muse and are currently setting up our Iris Market Builder Account so that very soon.... www.familypendragon.com will be a fully functioning yarn Mecca ;) I can't tell you how excited I am about this! I am pretty clueless about web stuff - but Michelle is being very patient and helpful with me, LOL! The plan is to set up the site to make it easier for wholesale as well as regular customers to shop with us. Price breaks will also be built in for anyone that shops with us and wants to buy in bulk. I plan to set up a calendar system so that our dye schedule is visible - that should help people to get an idea of when their order will be started, based on how far in advance we are "booked". I am hopeful this will help us to keep a good turnaround as well as provide realistic customer expectations - with out having to "close shop" each time we get a large order :) It's a theory anyway! Wish us luck ;)

So we finished up the order for Wool Girl! Now it is just a matter of waiting for the last few skeins to dry, then reskeining, packaging and shipping them Monday :) I promise to post pictures!!

We are also 1/3 of the way done with the order for Twist! So we'll probably be putting some custom dye slots up on Monday or Tuesday for those that want some yarn dyed. The new price info is up, although not much else is there right now besides sweater stones. I still need to get pics done for the pattern... Hoping you are all working on your Tunisian-in-the-round skills so you'll be ready for it! ;)

I have two long promised customs for friends that I haven't even started yet.... sorry your two - you know who you are :) Please forgive me! One will be a pair of longies for Jessica using the scrap yarn concept inspired by her Hudson Pants from Ky Baby knits - she asked me to use those as the inspiration for her Tunisian longies as well. Thanks to Lindsay for permission to carry on her theme with these unique Tunisian longies. I have done something similar in the past, but this one will be a little different. And Paully, I am sooo sorry I have been pushing these back since what.... October I think?? Once I get these two done - I will be listing one custom slot per month as an auction. I think that is the most I can safely plan on doing with all the yarn dyeing going on. If I get done early some months there may be some surprise stockings as well :) You'll hear about them here first!

Dye Heaven!

I just have to say that cranky teething babies notwithstanding - the last two days have been really fun dye days. With Vikki graciously watching Emerson while I work, and occassionally getting to get her gloves wet too, we've managed to knock out 22 beautiful skeins of sock yarn in the last two days! Its sooooo pretty to see all the colorful skeins hanging up drying, LOL! We're painting some, and space dyeing others. Its great to get to do some old colorways I haven't done in a long time. Its also fun to see how differently things take on superwash wool! I will post pictures when its all done so I can share what a pile of 68 skeins of hand dyed sock yarn looks like :) We'll also be doing the order for Twist Yarn shop and a custom dye job for Andrea - since she asked so sweetly ;)

New colorway and "Hiatus"

A gorgeous new colorway has been added called "Euro Bunny" which was designed for Sam of http://www.mybeautifulgirldesigns.com Be on the look out for a very cute collab on her site with it in the future!

In the meantime, some recent events have made it painfully obvious to me that I must make time to revamp both the pricing and the policies on my site. With the exception of Sweaterstones, the site will be bare for a while. If you need something just email and I will see if it can be worked into the mix :)

I am partnering up with my best friend Vikki - also a dyer that I taught - to keep my yarn turn around times as quick as possible. So Family Pendragon is getting to be an even bigger family :) Right now her main job is to be my ever-handy assistant and to help with my son, but she can always jump in and dye in a pinch as well!

Stephanie - your Minoan Temple is done and will ship in the morning!

Leanne - your 2 1/2 lbs of BFL is all dyed up in the colorways you requested and ready to mail as well.

I have a 68 skein order from Wool Girl in the works and an 18 skein order for Twist Yarn Shop - so things are really buzzing around here. We're starting the new year off right!

I was also asked about undyed yarn recently. I generally keep large quantities on hand and order quite frequently from Cestari, Henry's Attic, Wool2Dye4, and in the future possibly Ashland Bay and/or Fleece Artist if I run low on BFL and want to try some different brands. If you want some undyed, while I am not interested in immersing myself in any co-oping, I would be happy to sell you some of mine for minimal markup if you are interested. Feel free to email me with any questions or interests on that front.

Going to my niece's birthday party tomorrow and then Sunday is.... tax day :( Or should I say - the first of the tax days.... ugh! And of course, in the midst of all this, I have several new colorways swimming around my head - dyeing (pun intended) to get out onto some yarn. They'll just have to wait their turn! It is likely that the pattern will also have to get finished in February instead of January. But miracles do happen - so we'll see!
